Evergreen Tours operate river cruises in Europe with its partner company, Luftner Cruises. Evergreen charters the luxurious MS Amadeus Diamond exclusively for its passengers.
The cruise takes in three of Europe’s greatest rivers; the Rhine, the main and the Danube between Amsterdam and the twin city of Budapest in Hungary. Cruises often include a sightseeing bonanza in Paris at either the beginning or end of the holiday.
The river cruiser itself is unusual. She was built in 2009 and carries a maximum of only 143 passengers in lavish style. All cabins have wall sized outward views and 83% of them have a French balcony, which gives panoramic views without being exposed to inclement weather. The cabins are equipped with all of the accessories that would be expected in a modern hotel room. Whilst the ship was built along stylish lines, she is equipped with the latest state of the art technology. On the sun deck there is a small walking track, a putting green, which gives evidence of how smooth travelling on the cruiser is, a small pool, a covered lounging area and a Lido bar astern of the bridge. All of the crew speak at least English and German.
The dining room gives spectacular views. The dress code here is smart casual during the day but jacket and tie for the men and casual elegance for the ladies at dinner. The Captain’s dinner is slightly more formal but the same dress code applies. The food on board might be described as gourmet but is certainly of a high standard. It features local fresh ingredients and serves some superb food dishes. Wine with dinner is free. Of course, vegetarian and healthy options are always included in the menu.
The river cruise is not heavy on the type of entertainment that is expected on cruise ships today. It mostly consists of local entertainers coming aboard to display some form of national talent such a Romanian gypsy dancers or a choir singing operettas. This mostly fits with the age group of most passengers who are in the 50+ bracket. As well as the fitness facilities on the sun deck, there are a wellbeing club and a fitness suite.
Most of the entertainment aboard is associated with the visits to the historic cities that are visited along the way. A total of eighteen cities are visited and there is a guided tour for most of them. These tours ill not only take in the particular architecture of the city, but also the historic sites and a lot of information is given about them. For example, passengers learn a lot about World War II when they visit Nuremberg, which was of course the site of the trials of leading Nazis after the war had been concluded. The printing museum at Mainz is very popular as is the private glass blowing which is conducted for passenger at Wertheim in the traditional style. Another popular visit is the amazing Bishop’s baroque palace at Wurzburg, which well deserves its UNESCO World Heritage Site distinction. There is the baroque abbey at Melk which is no less than 900 years old and offers spectacular views of the river. You can also visit Kuenringer castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. The main sites of Vienna are visited including the opera House, St Stephens Cathedral and the Hofburg palace. Finally you will arrive at the twin city of Budapest consisting of the ancient city of Buda and the more recent Pest which straddle the beautiful Danube.
The cruises offered by Evergreen Tours are packed full of fantastic scenery of the castles and vineyards of the great rivers, historic cities and traditional culture. It is a tour for those who like to exercise their minds whilst enjoying a very standard of food and accommodation.
