Avalon Waterway Cruises
Avalon waterways was created in 2004 by the world famous and longstanding Globus tours company. Since its inception, Avalon has launched at least one new riverboat each year. The latest have a unique propulsion system that gives a much quieter experience to passengers when the riverboat is under way. Most passenger lists on Avalon riverboats will be made up mostly of North Americans in the 50+ age group.
The cruises are mainly aimed at the North American market. The levels of service, food and drink reflect that and all crewmembers speak very good English. Food on the riverboats is served at a very high standard. For example, even though breakfast is served buffet style, extra dishes can be cooked on demand. Lunches always include at least two hot dishes and fresh baked bread is always available. Dinner is four courses and as good as could be expected. Free red or white wine is also served with dinner. There are always vegetarian and “Healthy options” dishes available.
Entertainment is not a lavish affair on an Avalon riverboat. They all have a very comfortable piano bar for after dinner relaxing and depending on where the riverboat is, local artists will come aboard to entertain the passengers.
Avalon’s cruises last from between seven and twenty four nights. The European riverboats cruise the continent’s great and historic rivers. They travel the Rhine from the Swiss Alps through Germany and Belgium to the North Sea and Holland. Other riverboats cruise the Moselle through France, Luxembourg and Germany whilst others cruise the mighty Danube through Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Romania and Serbia to the Black Sea. There are also cruises along the Seine from Paris to the beaches of Normandy.
The company also runs some specialist cruises at various times of the year. There are the ever popular cruises through the vineyards which are always accompanied by experts. Other experts accompany the cruises which are designed to sample the cuisines of Burgundy and Provence. In the spring, the cruise through the tulip fields of Holland and Belgium are also very popular. The Christmas cruise through Vienna and Austria visits Christmas markets. Other extremely popular specialist cruises are the ones concentrating on music. These magnificent cruises along either the Danube or the Rhine offer special concerts both on and off the riverboat and there are talks given on the history of European classical music.
In recent years the company has expanded its successful operations to operate cruises on China’s Yangtze River. This cruise visits such cities as Shanghai, Xian and Beijing. An extension cruise sometimes goes as far as Tibet whilst another cruise visits Hong Kong. Ten night cruises are now also available along the Nile with overnight stops in Cairo or Aswan.
Avalon now operate cruises in the Galapagos islands which are becoming very popular as people become more interested in the environment. The eleven night cruise visits the Charles Darwin Research Centre and Quito.
Avalon is a subsidiary of the very well known and successful Globus group who have been conducting guided tours around the world for many years. The company offers a high standard of food and accommodation as well visits to some of the most interesting rivers and locations in the world. Their itineraries are well thought out and passenger comfort is their number one priority.
